Jessica Chastain plays the title character in “Molly’s Game,” but based on the film’s new trailer, it looks like the real star is Aaron Sorkin. The Oscar-winning screenwriter makes his directorial debut with this adaptation of Molly Bloom’s memoir about the high-stakes poker games she ran for Hollywood stars, sports figures and Russian mobsters.

The teaser starts out by reeling off Mr. Sorkin’s impressive credits, including “A Few Good Men” and “The Social Network,” and includes laudatory quotes about him from critics. The lightning pace and snappy dialogue (“You don’t want to break the law when you’re breaking the law”) will feel familiar to fans of Mr. Sorkin’s earlier work, especially his TV series “The West Wing.”

Quick glimpses of Kevin Costner (as Molly’s father, a psychologist) and Michael Cera (as an unnamed celebrity poker player) can be seen, but Ms. Chastain spends the most time with Idris Elba, who’s cast as her defense attorney. Given their chemistry in the trailer, “Molly’s Game” could be a good bet when the film opens on Nov. 22.
