Robert Kirkman, the creative mastermind behind The Walking Dead comic book series that spawned the popular AMC TV show, has a new series coming out in March: Oblivion Song.

He and Lorenzo De Felici, who is a co-creator of the new series and draws it, will tell a sci-fi story about 300,000 inhabitants of Philadelphia who disappeared 10 years ago into a horrific alien dimension. Rescue attempts dwindle, and the survivors are struggling with a changed world.

Not many comic book series announcements come with a news conference, like this one did on Wednesday, but not many comics have the cultural impact of The Walking Dead. That series, published by Image, has inspired video games, toys and other merchandise in addition to the TV show. (For a glimpse into some of the zombie mania, check out “The World’s Greatest Walking Dead Collection,” an auction of TV production art, comic books and original art, at Metropolis Gallery in New York that runs from Friday through Dec. 5.)

Could Oblivion Song end up on television like Outcast, another of Mr. Kirkman’s comic books, which became a Cinemax series? “It’s definitely not why this project exists,” Mr. Kirkman said at the news conference. “I love doing comics. It’s an art form I feel most comfortable with and something that I really enjoy.”

That said, he’s not ruling out a development deal. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s an announcement at some point,” he said.
