Meryl Streep will play the mother of Perry Wright (who is played by Alexander Skarsgard), according to reports.
The legendary actress will star alongside fellow Hollywood favourites Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz in the upcoming series.
A representative for HBO announced on Twitter that the three-time Academy Award-winning actress would be starring in the second season.
The post read: “Welcoming #MerylStreep to our tribe of fierce #BigLittleLies women.”
The 68-year-old actress will reportedly play a woman named Mary Louise Wright, who is the mother of violent Perry Wright.
In the first season, it was revealed that Perry had died. Now reports are suggesting that Meryl’s character will arrive in town after becoming concerned about the well-being of her grandchildren following his death.
HBO has teased the second season of the show, saying: “[It will explore the] malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships [and] the fragility of marriage.
“Of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode… the potential for an emotional and bodily injury shall loom.”
The first season of Big Little Lies received rave reviews for its realistic portrayal of domestic violence between Alexander’s alter ego and Nicole’s character Celeste Wright.
Nicole, 50, revealed that filming the violent scenes left her “in pain”, however she said she was intent on continuing with the project to “tap into the truth” about domestic abuse.
Speaking to Vulture she said: “Afterward, I would just be quiet. I would go home and be quiet. After we shot some of the really, really violent scenes, I was in a lot of pain myself.
“My body was. It was very strange. It was very uncomfortable. It wasn’t a good feeling, I have to say. But women go through this, so I wanted to tap into the truth of it.”
Asked why she cast Alexander to play Perry, she replied: “He was so good. I wanted him! I wanted him badly! I was like, ‘come on, please. Come on HBO, we’ve gotta get him’.
“They had a relationship with him already [working on True Blood]. He was really amazing because he wanted to work with [director] Jean-Marc and it’s a great role for him.”
Earlier this month, Nicole won three awards for her portrayal of Celeste, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or TV Movie and Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress in a Movie/Miniseries.
Big Little Lies is based on the Liane Moriarty novel and was adapted into a series by television writer and producer David E. Kelly.
Big Little Lies is expected to return to HBO in 2019.
