Speaking to Real Housewives of Melbourne star Jackie Gillies, he revealed the royal’s final words to him and admitted he thought she was “playing a trick” on him when she died.
Paul has shared several secrets regarding Princess Diana during his short time on I’m A Celebrity but last night saw him overcome with grief.
“When she died, I sat with her, I held her hand and I said to her, ‘Wake up, wake up, you’re not really dead are you?’” he recalled.
“‘You’re still alive and you’re playing a trick on me.’”
Describing the scene, he continued: “She didn’t open her eyes and I said, ‘Why did you leave me here?
“‘Why didn’t you take me with you? Because my place is to look after you.’”
Paul, who was Diana’s butler between 1987 and 1997, told Jackie that he believed the mother-of-two left him behind so he could take care of her family.
“I realised I had to take care of what she’d left behind here,” the 59-year-old said.
“She couldn’t do that and she’d left me to do that, so I had to take care of her world and the people in it.
“For a long time I couldn’t let go of that because as time passes she will fade. I’m beginning to forget what her voice sounded like. And forget what she smelt like. I don’t want to forget that.”
It came after Paul took a swipe at Diana’s mother Frances Shard Kydd during Wednesday’s instalment.
“Diana’s mother married Peter Shand Kydd, the wallpaper tycoon,” he noted.
“And Diana always thought it was her fault that mummy had left home. She blamed herself.
“That’s where her anorexia started. She suffered with it all her life. She punished herself.”
He later added: “She wasn’t a very kind person. Not very motherly.”
