Art, Punk Rock and a New Governor Reinvigorate Trenton

Reconstruction on the golden-domed State House and restoration of the city’s reputation are underway, offering compelling reasons for a day trip, about a 90-minute train ride from Midtown. Blocks of rowhouses and Italianate Victorians, some beautifully restored, some begging for attention, look like historic parts of Philadelphia. In February, a handsome and long-empty bank, at 143 East State Street, was reborn as the soaring BSB Gallery, a platform for local artists and music performances.

“The fact is, we’re more than a negative headline,” said Joseph Kuzemka, 43, who founded the Trenton Punk Rock Flea Market in 2013. On April 7 and 8, the event will feature live punk bands, vendors of vinyl records and vintage goods, a tented beer garden and food trucks. Mr. Kuzemka is particularly thrilled that two of his heroes — Greg Hetson of the Circle Jerks and Marky Ramone, the Ramones’ drummer — will be on hand to sign autographs.
