Coronation Street fans have watched Kate Connor (played by Faye Brookes) and Rana Nazir (Bhavna Limbachia) fall head over heels for each other on the ITV soap.

Their romance has become a huge it with viewers at home, with many praising the level of acting and the handling of the storyline.

However, Faye, 30, confessed to having concerns about the narrative in the early stages.

She explained: “At first I was sceptical when I was handed the responsibility of carrying this storyline.

“More so for Bhavna because I didn’t know what sort of backlash she would get.”

She went on to tell PA: “But it’s all been really positive and that is what Corrie does well.

“We are doing it for good and it’s been so well received that I know that we are reaching out to a lot of young girls that are of the religion that Rana is.”

Speaking about her character, she added: “I only want the best for Kate and Rana’s relationship.

“So if there is a fandom at the moment for Kate and Rana then I am jumping on that bandwagon – completely.”

The actress also said she hopes to be a “voice” for people going through a similar situation to Kate and Rana.

They recently went public with their relationship in Weatherfield, which has delighted Faye.

Asked if she would like to see them get their happily ever after, she replied: “Personally I would love it.

“I think Kate and Rana are a great dynamic on screen and people have accepted this newfound love which in the past has been taboo.”

Whats’s more, Faye is hopeful her onscreen persona will make a real difference in the LGBT and Muslim community.

“We want to break down that barrier.” she said. “And I love the response from the Kana fans.”

She continued: “This is groundbreaking and it’s brilliant for the LGBT community and for Rana’s religion.

“I think that’s really inspiring for the next generation, so let’s go forward with that.”

The actress also revealed her dream of seeing one of the women have a child.

She said: “It would be quite significant for a lesbian couple to be married and to go through that whole process.”

Coronation Street continues on ITV at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
