The Walking Dead season 8 finale Whisperers confirmed for season 9 amid Rick Grimes twist | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead season eight finale, ‘Wrath’.

Last night saw Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) finally put an end to All Out War.

Along with his merry band of Alexandrians, the hero chose to capture Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) instead of kill him.

As is seen in the comics, Rick slashed the evil villain’s throat before deciding to keep him alive as a prisoner.

It was all down to Eugene (Josh McDermott), who replaced the Savior’s bullets with ones that were guaranteed to backfire.

However, with Rick choosing to save Negan, the likes of Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohen), Jesus (Tom Payne) and Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) appeared to be planning against him and lover, Michonne (Danai Gurira).

However, it seems a mutiny could be the least of their worries as fans believe they’ve spotted The Whisperers.

The group, led by Alpha, have been terrorising Rick and the Alexandrians in the comic books for many editions now and fans of the AMC zombie show have been desperate to see them brought to life on screen.

The moment came as Rick’s group walked along a series of poles which presumably marked a border.

Die-hard fans of the cult show noted they had a striking similarity to those used by The Whisperers in the comic books.

What’s more, it seemed the evil group were closer than anyone could have expected as Rick made sure to point to a gaggle of walkers.

While it could seem innocent at first as zombies are all over the Atlanta land, the zombies and the poles combined has a huge significance.

In Robert Kirkman’s comics, The Whisperers disguise themselves in the bodies of the dead.

Could this mysterious group actually be the first sign of Alpha’s evil group?

Fans certainly thought so and they flocked to Twitter to share their theories.

One wrote: “Ok so the big question after #TWDSeason8finale: was that herd just a herd or was that The Whisperers mixed into a herd? #TWDFamily what do you think?”

Another added: “I’m guessing it was the whisperers I can’t think of any other reason to show that heard of roamingin the distance & those poles kind of gave it away IMO but idk.”

A third suggested: “Yes must have been since AMC stated we would see them in the finale.”

The Walking Dead finale airs tonight on FOXUK at 9pm.

Season nine is expected to air later this year.
